House fire challenges Kinnelon firefighters
A basement fire at 16 Forge Rd kept Kinnelon’s firefighters busy all night March 18th taking till 9am the following morning to fully extinguish. Investigators believe a fire in the basement drop ceiling was burning well before the owners smelled smoke or the detectors picked it up. Firefighting efforts were hampered by water supply issues. The nearest water was about 4000 feet away. Water had to be shuttled and relayed from a pond 1200 feet to the bottom of Forge Rd, then pumped all the way up the mountain another 1000 feet to the cul de sac where another pumper sent it the final 800 feet up the steep driveway to the attack engine. Over 75 firefighters were on scene from Kinnelon, Butler, Bloomingdale, Montville, Riverdale, Pequannock, and West Milford. Triboro first aid also stood by.
